Reflection and Assessment
When I first think about assessment, my mind goes straight to the type of standardized testing that has become so prominent, as Robyn pointed out in her post. It was refreshing to see the Boss article look at strategies for reflective self-assessment. George Mayo's use of blogging both motivated writing and encouraged the students to think about their own writing, in part because it is a long term project that provides easy access to past writing. I would speculate that this and other methods that allow for reflection about writing lead to greater improvement in writing than teaching them rules based on standards. When students learn writing strategies through assessing their own writing, they will retain those strategies even in high pressure testing environments. This type of creative work can be an effective way to prepare students for more formal type of assessments that they will take later.
