Google Lit Trips & Global Outreach

Initially, I was drawn to the presentation topic of Global Awareness and Outreach so naturally this weeks reading were very interesting to me.  This is a topic that is of personal importance to me.  It is something I plan to incorporate into my classroom.

The way I understand it global awareness is promoting and understanding the diversity of cultures and communities of the world.  Outreach is the connection to any community or cause to understand, communicate, assist and collaborate.

I believe that a global awareness and outreach program is a fundamental part of ones education.  Global outreach and awareness programs are vital because it provides children with a broad based perspective of the world.  It helps children develop empathy, understanding and respect for different cultures and people.  It encouraged people to celebrate the differences in people, cultures and communities.

It is my hope that when global awareness and outreach is incorporated into my future classrooms my students will be as inspired as Ann Brusca’s students at the Center Street Elementary School.  Brusca’s students were inspired to volunteer at a soup kitchen in their community as a result of the Orphan Train Google Lit Trip.  I was impressed by the Suzie Boss article, Google Lit trips and those students.

Google Maps and Google Earth are incredible resources but I think for students they are a bit overwhelming.  Google Lit Trips has focused these resources into useful and educational tools for students of all ages.  Google Lit Trips will bring a novel or story to life and has the ability to make outdated text relatable for today’s technologically advanced student.
